Lightning sparks blazes across SA

Firefighters have been kept busy battling blazes across South Australia sparked by lightning as a thunderstorm passes over the state.

SA Power Networks said its data showed there had been more than 32,000 lighting strikes in the 24 hours up until 4.30pm, with most of those coming since midday.

The Country Fire Service said lighting had sparked 60 fires across the state.


Water bombers were called in to help battle a blaze near Point Boston on the Eyre Peninsula.

Fires were also sparked at Charleston, Mylor and Mt Barker in the Adelaide Hills, along with One Tree Hill north of Adelaide.

The Bureau of Meteorology had issued a severe thunderstorm warning to include parts of metropolitan Adelaide.

It has warned of damaging wind for the Adelaide Metropolitan area, Mount Lofty Ranges, West Coast, Lower Eyre Peninsula, Eastern Eyre Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula, Kangaroo Island, Flinders, Mid North, Riverland, Murraylands, North West Pastoral and parts of the Upper South East, Lower South East and North East Pastoral districts.

“Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging wind gusts in excess of 90 km/h in the warning area this afternoon and early evening," a warning issued at 4.36pm reads.

"Locations which may be affected include Adelaide, Port Lincoln, Whyalla, Renmark, Ceduna and Roxby Downs."

Heavy rain, lightning and even hail have been reported in Adelaide’s northern suburbs as the storm moves across the state.
