Parents accused of starving child appear in court

Two parents have faced an Adelaide court accused of starving their four-year-old son.

The 27-year-old man and 23-year-old woman are charged with criminal neglect and failing to provide food.

The father is also accused of aggravated assault.

Both appeared in the Holden Hill Magistrates Court his afternoon and were remanded in custody.

7News has been told the boy was discovered in an emaciated condition early yesterday and was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

Police and council workers combed through the Gilles Plains housing trust property this afternoon.

Housing SA officers inspected the house late last year, but reported nothing of concern.

Families SA has applied for interim guardianship of the boy through the Youth Court for the duration of the investigation.

Neighbours said the family moved into the home about a year ago and kept to themselves.
