Four children from the same family have been killed in a horrific house fire in Lancashire, UK.

Reece Smith, 19, four-year-old twins Holly and Ella Smith and Jordan Smith, two, died after a fire broke out during their mother’s birthday party.

Fire crews were called to the scene at around 11:30pm on Saturday night.

According to the Daily Mail, the scene was ‘chaotic’ with many distressed party goers spilling out into the street.

The four victims were taken to Preston Royal Infirmary but were all later pronounced dead.

It’s believed the fire started in a loft conversion where the youngest children were sleeping. Although there were smoke alarms, they were not believed to be working.

Their mother, 36-year-old Michelle Smith returned to the scene on Sunday. According to reports, the mother of nine was sobbing uncontrollably and said: "I have lost the lights of my life... where can I turn?"

According to Colin Ostler, the father of three of Michelle’s children, his former partner is still in shock.

"She's devastated, we all are, but it's not really hit her yet. She's too upset to talk about it, the enormity of what's happened just hasn't sunk in," he added.

It’s been revealed the fatalities could have been worse. His three children with Ms Smith, Bethany, 11, Jodie, ten, and Chloe, seven, wanted to stay with their mum that night however he decided against it.

“Thankfully, we said no and I took them home, otherwise who knows what could have happened.”

Reece has been hailed a hero after it emerged he went back inside the house to try to rescue the three children.

According to police, they’re keeping an open mind to what might have happened and that they’ll be talking to a number of people who were in the house when the fire broke out.
