UPDATE: The Hattersley family were overwhelmed with donations after this story went to air. Now Luke could be walking again within months thanks to thousands of dollars worth of donations from Seven News viewers. View that story in the clip on the left, and the original story below.

Father of four Luke Hattersley has vowed to walk again, and fulfil a lifelong dream, after losing a leg in a shocking crash at Mount Nebo.

For the first time since his truck accident on Mt Nebo three weeks ago, Luke Hattersley met Dan Bodnar, the man who helped save his life.

Mr Hattersley said he screamed for help as his truck was hanging upside down that day.

"I was yelling out and screaming out for someone to come and help me, 'cause I didn't know if anybody had seen it," he said.

With Luke's legs pinned between a tree and the smashed cabin of his truck, Dan Bodnar was forced to amputate the 30-year-old's leg.

"He was quite sick, he was shocked, he had a broken pelvis and it was time critical to get him out."

Luke narrowly avoided being dragged down the mountain to his death when, minutes later, the truck's wreckage broke free.

Doctors hope Luke will be walking on a prosthetic leg in about six months time, but the artificial limb he needs will cost as much as $100,000, money the Hattersley family doesn't have.

The family from Morayfield is now turning to the public to help Luke walk again, and realise his dream of becoming a police officer.

Donations have already started flowing in after the story aired last night, and anyone who wants to help can get in touch with the family by sending an email to Seven News at 7news@seven.com.au.

Mr Hattersley said having his wife and kids at his side gives him strength.

"I know she's there for me, and my kids love me, and that's what keeps me going."

"It could have been a lot worse. At least I can move on from this."

Mr Hattersley's wife Jacki, and their four children all under the age of four, are helping Luke pull through the pain.

"The fact that he's alive, and my children have a father and I have my husband, what more could I ask for?"
