Underground house on the market

One of Brisbane's most unique homes is now on the market.

The property is well known in the Mount Cotton community as 'The house that's underground'.

Built in 1985, the earth was excavated and construction began below the surface.

"It was built by somebody who had a lot of vision - that's clear," home owner Ian Bridge said.

"The old timers around here, as soon as you say you're in the house that's underground, they immediately know it."

Now it's gaining a reputation in the real estate industry as well. Mr Bridge is selling and agents aren't sure what to make of it.

"I've never seen anything like this in my 10 years of real estate," said agent Mark Taylor.

"I was fairly speechless. So hence, we're going to take it to auction to see what people's reaction is."

As an environmental scientist Mr Bridge instantly fell in love with the property.

He says he hasn't used air-conditioning since he moved in.

"It creates its own micro-climates. That's one of the most interesting features of the house."

The only reason for Mr Bridge to go above ground is for a swim - access to the pool is gained by stepping off the roof.

Mr Bridge hopes the new owner enjoys a low maintenance lifestyle - perhaps not the best choice for the home handyman.

"You certainly don't need to do anything. You inspect the roof each week when you mow it," he said.

The home is up for auction on October 20th.
