A 23-year-old man who attempted to dive from the balcony of a Gold Coast pub on the weekend has died in hospital from his injuries.

It is believed BMX star Dane Searls was attempting to dive into the pool at Billy's Beach House on Sunday night.

Instead he landed on the cement sustaining critical head and back injuries.

Searls had remained in a coma since Sunday night.

Police say Searls passed away in a Gold Coast Hospital this morning.

Friends began posting tribute messages on social media websites on Friday morning, and an RIP Dane Searls page was also set up on Facebook.

"He was a true legend and inspiration thanks dane for providing some of the best riding on the planet and letting us see it," one post said.

"Ride in peace bro, your a true legend," read another.

Searls, from Woy Woy on the NSW Central Coast, had been celebrating a BMX world record he had set two days earlier, on jumps specially built for him on a rural property at Boonah, west of the Gold Coast.

He had performed a series of four jumps across gaps of nine, 12, 15 and finally 18 metres, all from a height of two to three storeys.
