Devine in Twitter controversy

Fairfax journalist Miranda Devine has reportedly sparked another Twitter controversy after accusing a gay student of "rogering gerbils".

Devine became involved in the online exchange with Justin Barbour after posting a link to her column about the sacking of The Age columnist and comedian Catherine Deveny, News Limited says.

Barbour, 20, tweeted as @justinbarbour to Devine: "You've had enough of attacking the gays for now i see. great thanks."

Devine posted in reply: "you've had enough of rogering gerbils now I see. great. thanks."

The posting apparently reached Devine's Twitter followers before it was deleted from the writer's @mirandadevine Twitter account.

It's claimed Devine also sent Barbour a private message saying: "Love the mock outrage. You dished it out. See how offensive it is to get it back. Lesson in life."

In a lesson for Devine in online life, Barbour had already taken screenshots of her Tweets before posting them.

Deveny, who was sacked after controversially tweeting that she hoped 11-year-old Bindi Irwin "gets laid" on Logies night, wrote: "It's sad. Miranda will keep her job and I will still have lost mine. But it's gerbils I really feel sorry for."
