Police say their hopes of finding a soldier who fell overboard from an inflatable boat on Tuesday are fading.
The soldier, in his late 20s, fell overboard on Lake Moawhango, near Waiouru, about 5.40pm on Tuesday while on a training exercise.
Police divers and an aircraft have been part of the search team looking for the soldier on Tuesday but had found no sign of him as darkness fell on Wednesday.
Ruapehu police area commander Inspector Steve Mastrovich says given the fact the soldier has been missing for more than a day, the prospect of finding him alive were not looking good.
The search will resume at daybreak on Thursday and will include Navy, Defence Force and police staff.
