Sandy Roberts

Sandy is one of Australia's most successful sportscasters. For the last 34 years, he has worked exclusively for the Seven Network.

Sandy was interested in the media from a young age - a somewhat strange preoccupation for a boy brought up on a sheep farm near the country town of Lucindale in South Australia.

As a kid, he made a cardboard projector and used it to produce short films, which he would charge his parents to see.

Sandy's career started at Perth radio station 6PM, after a short stint as a copyboy for the Adelaide News. Sandy then travelled extensively throughout Europe for two years, before returning to Australia, where he joined Radio 3CS Colac as an announcer. In 1971, he switched to television station BCV8-TV in Bendigo as a newsreader.

In 1973, Sandy joined ADS7 in Adelaide as a general announcer and presenter. He did it all - from hosting Miss Australia contests to 'It's Academic' and football commentating.

Sandy's fate as a sportcaster was sealed when he was asked by Seven to be one of the commentators for the 1980 Moscow Olympics telecast. After the games, he joined Seven Melbourne.

Since then, Sandy has called more than 700 games of AFL football, including ten Grand Finals. He also commentates on Seven's tennis and golf telecasts. As a senior commentator on Seven's telecasts he has extensively covered the Davis Cup worldwide and the Australian Open Tennis for the past decade.

As the network's face of golf, Sandy has covered over 100 tournaments including the Australian Open and Australian Masters for the past two decades. He has also led Seven's coverage of two US Opens, a British Open Championship and two Presidents Cups in Melbourne and Virginia, USA.

Sandy has enjoyed working with some of the great names in sport including Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, and Tiger Woods. And in tennis, he has shared the microphone with the likes of John McEnroe and Jim Courier.

Sandy proudly boasts hosting and commentating on ten Olympic Games: six Summer and four Winter Olympics.

Over the years, Sandy has had major involvement in many of Seven's top rating sports shows. He took over as host of World of Sport from Ron Casey in 1981, he co-hosted 4Quarters, a footytainment program in 1995 and hosted Seven's 4million Sporting Chance of a Lifetime specials.

Today, Sandy has an enviable reputation for being one of Australia's most knowledgeable and respected industry professionals, with vast experience at major sports events. Along with his many varied sporting roles, Sandy currently presents week night sport for Seven News Melbourne.

Sandy signed a new three year contract with news in May 2007, and is looking forward to consolidating Seven Melbourne's Number One News position and working on many more sporting events.
