Funny things elections

By Patrick Condren | View Archive February 26th, 2009, 8:24 am

They are hilarious, unless you actually happen to be covering one especially in the heat of a Queensland summer likeĀ I am at the moment.

It's the little things that are the most annoying like trying to find out where you going to be. Not next week, not in two days' time but tomorrow.

So paranoid are the campaigns that they refuse to give out travel details until the very last minute. Then there's the heat, when it's 40 degrees in the shade, Far North Queensland is not the place to be wearing a jacket and tie.

Of course there's the cut and thrust of the policy debate but who gives a bugger about that when you've got Lawrence Springborg doing Barry White impersonations on the radio and Anna Bligh enters the election confectionary stakes?

Never heard of them before, well nobody had really until the 2006 poll. Last time around Heather Beattie launched herself into the campaign with a batch of 'cookies', I know, I know, it's Australia and they should be biscuits but big Pete handed them out on the Government jet and declared them 'cookies'.

Anyway as we flew through the night on Monday bound for Townsville one of the Premier's staffers started handing out chocolate ganash (not sure if that's spelt correctly).

Baked by the hand of Ms Bligh's son Oliver it went down a treat with a couple of the cameramen. I've asked for the receipe, it's the big issues here in Queensland.

I still don't know where I'm going tomorrow and as if all that wasn't enough a bloody gekko on the ceiling just shat on the laptop computer keyboard on which I'm typing this blog.

Try explaining that to the boss. Funny things elections.
