What's a Queensland political joke?
The Liberal Party.
This lot have languished as the junior party in a coalition that has been comprehensively flogged at the last three elections.
Members from both the Liberals and their coalition partners the nationals have voted to merge the two parties.
The united conservative force will be called the Liberal National Party (LNP) - catchy, hey?
Marriage vows are set to be exchanged on July 26, less than two weeks away.
Recent polls show that voters are prepared to give the new entity a go. Maybe not enough to win the next election, but certainly to put conservatives within striking distance at the one after.
But some in the Liberal Party have delusions of grandeur. They want one of their own anointed President of the LNP. So petty are these people that they are prepared to scuttle the marriage if they don't get their own way.
Nationals president Bruce McIver is, this week, considering a list of demands he received from the Libs.
All the while, voters get to watch this squabble over an unpaid, yet powerful position.
Which begs the question, will the electorate bother giving them the tick at the next poll even if they are merged?
Former Premier Peter Beattie used to taunt the opposition in Parliament: "If ya can't govern yourself, ya can't govern Queensland."

Shame on each & every one of you!!

Jul 21 01:31 pmFireworks will fill the sky, horns will blast, most of us will gasp in shock if ever you write a piece that is nonpartisan & free from undue bias or preconceived political opinions and prejudice.
Your warm & fuzzy admiration for the Labor party (state & federal) is hardly a secret. Don't tell me you were not aware of that? : )
But then again i guess you have bills to pay just like the rest of us.Integrity often takes a back seat in your 'profession', you are i
Ho hum!! Patrick Condren yet another biased piece of clap trap. Your journalistic bombasts totally lacks credibility simply because you are a paid up member of the gaggle of electronic & print media bootlicking the Labor party.
Aug 7 10:54 amIf ever you write a non partisan piece you may salvage a vestige of legitimacy. However i for one won't be holding my breath.
Sadly Springborgs enthusiasm has not been picked up by the rest of them. I will give them a shot if they stop this bickering and get on with challenging Bligh
