Anna Bligh and husband Greg Withers went for a romantic walk along the beach yesterday morning. A swag of cameras in tow to set the mood just right. If the polls are to be believed you might as well get in and use that taxpayer funded limo while you can.
We knew the day was coming for three weeks. So there was none of the usual heart pumping, adrenelin rush normally associated with a premier calling an election.
Which could go some way to explain why yesterday was all so bloody boring. Like the entire world had suddenly and unexpectedly been coated in beige... or powder blue, like the old safari suits.
The Premier toddled over to Ashgrove State School to be greeted by a whole bunch of happy little vegemites including the Kate Jones - Kevin Rudd wasn't among them.
It's funny how the media has changed in the three years since the last campaign.
Obviously we've got Twitter, which was around then but is much bigger and ... well bigger than last time.
And there's the disturbing trend of reporters trying to do each other's job. If you'd care to read on I will explain.
At the Bligh and Newman media conferences yesterday Steven Wardill @stevenwardill and Koren Helbig @korenhelbig from the Courier Mail did video pieces for the paper's website. Outlining their view on the event.
And here's me. A television reporter, writing a comment piece for the @7NewsBrisbane website. It's a funny old world.
Speaking of which - Campbell Newman also used the Ashgrove electorate as his launch pad.
When asked about leadership, as in "who will be premier if you don't win Ashgrove?", Mr Newman has consistently replied, "if I don't win Ashgrove we won't win Government".
Which is statistically wrong. The facts are... the LNP need a 4.5% swing to move across to the treasury benches while Newman needs a 7.1% swing to beat Kate Jones.
Mr Newman has also said: "I trust the voters of Ashgrove not to get it wrong". Pardon? Just a tip, the perceived political wisdom is that the voters always get it right.
So you might want to "refine" that response otherwise the voters will get it wrong... for you.
The Newman travelling gang, of which I am a part, have been told to pack wet weather gear. It's only day 1... 34 to go.

Nothing will save Anna Bligh and that terrible Labor government up there.
ReplyI will enjoy waking up on my birthday to a new "Fresh" Queensland Government. It will be sweeter too being on holidays in Vanuatu :-). I am wondering if Gordon Nuttall will have new cell mates after the election. Maybe they can have their own "carcass" meeting in the exercise yard.
