'Wacko Jacko' had a heart

There's absolutely no doubt Jacko was wacko. There's no doubt this creative genius was deeply flawed.

Yes, he was strange, bizarre and just plain weird. Yes, child abuse allegations always hung over him.

But there is also no doubt he did genuinely care for kids. And the impact he had on so many young lives was astronomical.

As she listened to radio talkback callers denigrating Michael Jackson on Friday morning, my sister, Sarah, called me. Out of a sense of justice and fairness, she felt she had to relate this moving story about the pop superstar.

In the late 1980's Sarah was a nurse at Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital in the special care unit when Michael Jackson was touring Australia.

She was primary carer for two boys, aged six and seven, who were left quadraplegics after horrific car accidents. They were learning how to cope with breathing on ventilators and how to live the rest of their lives in wheelchairs, totally dependent on family and carers.

Understandably they and their families were shellshocked and depressed.

Both boys were HUGE Michael Jackson fans and as a 'pick-me-up' treat got tickets for one of his Melbourne concerts. Sarah rang the promoter, hoping to secure some special arrangement for the boys to get to the front of the arena so they could actually see what was going on because so many fans would be up on their feet dancing.

A few days later she hadn't heard back and was a little peeved, until on the ward she got a tap on the shoulder. A fellow nurse told her someone had arrived asking for 'Nurse Sarah' and two of her patients.

There, standing in the corner with just a couple of staff members, no huge entourage, was Michaal Jackson! The biggest pop star in the world, a name on everybody's lips, had heard about the two quadraplegic boys from his local promoter and had come to visit them.

Sarah says he sat just chatting to the two kids for about 15 minutes, speaking in his typically quiet, hushed tones.

Sarah couldn't hear what they talked about, but there were lots of smiles, and one of the kids said later he told the superstar he liked his perfume!

After a quick photo session with the boys, Jackson and his minders left the hospital.

The quadraplegic boys have now grown into quadraplegic men. Their lives are still tough and a constant, relentless struggle, but they still remember the day one of the most famous man in the world made them feel special.

When making a judgement about Michael Jackson's complicated, confused, chaotic life, Sarah thought people show know this story.
