Of all the addictions to have, I imagine sex addiction is not a bad one.

Serious drugs will leave you looking liking Amy Whinehouse. Or dead. And I'm not sure which is worse.

Anyway when the news came out that former X-Files star, David Duchovny was entering ribald rehab for his addiction to sex, a whole lot of things began to make sense. Silly me, previously I'd thought his current and very raunchy series ‘Californication' was just a piece of LA fiction, not an on-going documentary on his life.

C.a.l.i.f.o.r.n.i.c.a.t.i.o.n ... it just slides off the tongue.

For those who don't know it, Duchovny plays a randy writer. A very randy writer. His book editor might occasionally put the blue pencil through David's work but its David's lead pencil that has most of the fun.

Who knew that he was a method actor?

But as much as some questions are answered by David's news, it has also raised a whole bunch of new ones. Like at what point does a fondness for sex become an addiction? And can you be addicted to sex if it is with just the one partner? And what's the story if that partner is just you?

And how do you get diagnosed? Do they run that first word that comes into your head test that shrinks often use? You know, I say "cat" you say "dog". I say "black" you say "white". This apparently was David's:

And what's the cure? I imagine given the powerful pull sex wields on the pleasure sensors of our brain there'd have to some pretty serious aversion therapy going on.

Poor David, to be blessed with good looks, fame, fortune AND sex addiction as well. It must be hard being him.

Very hard.

See, the cheap jokes are just too easy and that's why I feel sad, not so much for him but for his wife, Tea and his two young children. What I can't understand, what really puzzles me is why he made the news so public? What was the point of blurting it out to the world? Why did his wife and kids have to become victims as well? Why not spare them the public shame, the giggles, the titters, the off-colour jokes? Indeed, is his addiction so great that the responsibility of marriage and fatherhood is insufficiently important to curb his self obsession and self abuse? That's what I truly find puzzling because whatever the licentious temptations of Hollywood it strikes me that the responsibility and joy of a caring marriage and children to nurture and guide might perhaps have a greater value and greater attraction than short term pleasure. And if it doesn't, why not?
