Another Shot Across the Bow

For the reader who suggested I stick to the subject of dolphins instead of tackling the subject of lacklustre pollies - (and I could go on about that forever) this is one just for you!

A new report has found that toxic dust could kill off the latest stage of port Adelaide's housing development.

Even though the government has had this pollution report for three months, it's only just been released - good to see our pollies protecting public interest!

Anyway, this report by the Environment Protection Authority suggests airborne pollution is a problem in the port - due to discharges from local cement and fertiliser producers.

Therefore, there should be no new apartments built across the river due to the threat to public health.

Interesting....seeing that the Port River is supposed to be the world's first dolphin sanctuary.

This waterway was given "sanctuary" status by the present government several years ago .... despite the fact that nothing's really been done to clean up the river.

Sure, we have a couple of dolphin rangers ... which do as good as job as they can, considering they have a large waterway to care for 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

But, this whole "dolphin sanctuary" tag is just a croc.

It's even more ridiculous now that the EPA has found pollution levels are so high that humans shouldn't live on the river banks - so how on earth are dolphins supposed to actually survive in the river?

They breathe air as we do ... so, I guess this means that industrial discharge doesn't affect them? Is it just humans that are at risk .... I don't think so!

I've written blogs before on the state government's pathetic attempt to create a "world first" protected area for dolphins, without really doing much.

Now this latest report has just added strength to the argument that the Port River does not deserve to be called a "sanctuary" - it is simply a paper park.
