Tenants sue landlord over 'haunted house'

An American couple is suing their landlord for a refund on their bond money after allenging that their rental property is haunted, ABC News has reported.

Michele Callan and her fiance, Josue Chinchilla, moved into the home in New Jersey with Callan’s two children on March 1 and claim they could not stay there for more than a week.

They now want their landlord, Dr. Richard Lopez, a well-known orthodontist, to refund the $2250 bond money.

The couple claimed they started observing strange things in the three-bedroom apartment but put them down to the adjustment period in a new house.

"Three taps on the TV, taps on the shoulder..." Chinchilla told ABC News.

But over the course of the next seven days, they claim the 'paranormal activity' increased.

Phenomena such as flickering lights, menacing voices and flapping doors became increasingly common and clothes started to "fly out" of the wardrobes.

Chinchilla said he felt an invisible hand on his arm, while Callan claimed to have seen a dark figure in the bedroom.

The couple claim their lives would be in mortal danger if they attempted to move back into the house.

However, Lopez isn’t buying their claims and has filed a counter suit against the couple for breaking their one-year lease.

"Frankly, there is something else going on," Lopez’s attorney His attorney, David A. Semanchik said. “She is a single mom, she has this fiancé living with her. I think she is in over her head and she can’t afford the rent."
