An elderly driver accused of hitting and killing a pedestrian could face jail time, after the accident on the Central Coast.

Police say the woman was trying to park her car at a Toukley shopping centre on Tuesday, when the vehicle accelerated forward through shrubs and hit a bench where a 70-year-old woman was sitting.

The woman was pinned between the car and a shop front where local staff freed her, but she couldn't be revived.

The elderly driver was taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.

Police are looking at CCTV as part of their investigation, they'll prepare a report for the coroner.

The 87-year-old woman is waiting nervously while police decide on what action to take.
