Weight-loss surgery for WA MP

Weight-loss surgery for WA MP

WA Federal Labor MP Gary Gray will undergo bariatric surgery next week in an attempt to lose 30kg.

Mr Gray told _The West Australian _ he had taken the decision after years of struggling with his weight and six months of discussions with dietitians and specialist doctors.

The surgery involves the removal of about 80 per cent of the stomach.

"As a bloke 50-plus I've been having my blood checked for cholesterol," Mr Gray said.

"In the process of those regular check-ups it's become apparent I am on my way to becoming diabetic.

"I've found it impossible to lose the weight required and I have tried over the last seven or eight years. It got to the point where you have to decide what path you are on and where it finishes."

Mr Gray, 56, said the elective surgery would be privately financed and was risky.

"It's not something that should be taken lightly by anyone and that is why I have been in a program with specialists, dietitians and the like," he said.

In preparation for the surgery, he has been placed on a radically different diet with no carbohydrates, no alcohol and limited proteins.

His weight peaked at 110kg but he aims to get down to 80kg.

Mr Gray aims to return to work in time for Parliament resuming on August 26.
