WATCH: Moment father and son on fishing trip hook humpback whale

A boy and his father have had a fishing experience they won't be forgetting any time soon.

The pair, Nicholas and Glenn Brasen, had been fishing with friends off the coast of Kingscliff over the weekend, when the group got the fright of their lives, hooking a humpback whale.

"Holy sh** that's the closest I've ever been to a whale," one boy can be heard saying in the footage which has been shared to the YouTube account of Nico Brasen.

At first the group thought they had snared a big fish. In the video one man said, "just watch that anchor at the front of the boat, it's starting to move."

It is certainly not the catch of the day they were expecting - with the mammal appearing to be at least twice the size of their boat.

"I've got him with both my lines there," one man said.

The group quickly try to set it free.

"Snap it... get the knife," a boy in the footage said.

After this memorable encounter, the group is now vowing to be extra careful for the remainder of the migration season.
