Man shot dead by father-in-law who suspected affair with wife
A mother has wept in a Victorian court as she told of the pain at losing her only son.
David Paris was shot dead by his father-in-law who suspected him of having an affair with his wife.
Maxwell John Pain, 55, was last month found guilty of murdering his son-in-law.
In June 2014, believing the 36-year-old was having an affair with his wife, he drove to the victim’s house at Raywood, near Bendigo, and shot Mr Paris at close range, in the stomach.
Deborah Paris has travelled from Perth to be at every court hearing of the man who killed her son.
In a victim impact statement David Paris' fiancé and daughter of the accused Rebecca Lambert said she struggled to live without the man she was supposed to grow old with and to care for their eight-year-old son.
"He has to understand why daddy is in a small box next to the bed," he said.
Pain closed his eyes and appeared disinterested as Ms Paris showed the Victorian Supreme Court pictures of her only son saying his death had broken her soul.
“He was everything. absolutely everything to me,” the distraught mother told the court.
"You have put me in hell. I have no-one to call me mum."
The court heard Pain was not psychotic but may have suffered from delusions at the time of the shooting. He has refused to seek any treatment while in custody.
The case will return to court next month.
