Man crushed to death by 15 tonne concrete pier

A man has died after he was crushed by a 15-tonne concrete pier on a work site in Townsville.

Police said emergency crews responded to an industrial incident at a work site on Ingham Road, Bohle just before 11.00am.

It’s believed the 53-year-old man was crushed by a bridge pier weighing more than 15 tonnes. One concrete pier is approximately 27 metres long.

"It appears that the worker was working on strapping the piers, the concrete pier (to make it) able to be transported to another location when another section of piers has rolled on top of him," said Senior Sergeant Joe Matheson.

It is not yet known what caused the stack to fall.

The company is also going to conduct its own investigation.
