Meet the typical Aussie; mortgaged up mum with two kids and two cars

The first results of Australia’s crisis-plagued 2016 Census are out, and reveal the national snapshot’s picture of the typical Australian.

She is a married 38-year-old woman, with two children two cars and a mortgage on a three bedroom home.

The typical Aussie speaks English and comes from English ancestry but with both of her parents born in Australia.

However, the typical New South Welshman, Victorian and West Australian is the child of at least one migrant.

The typical Aboriginal Australian has a median age of just 23, compared to 38 for European descendants, and is also female.

The typical foreign-born Australian comes from England, is 44 years old, and is also female.

Tasmanians are the oldest in the nation, with a median age of 42, while Territorians are our youngest at just 34 years old.

The age of the typical migrant has declined by two years from 46 to 44 since the 2011 Census.

In Queensland, migrants are typically born in New Zealand. In NSW, the typical migrant hails from China and in Victoria they arrived via India.

Home ownership status varies wildly across the country, although most appear to own or mortgage their own home.

In 2006, Australian homes were most likely owned outright. Today, they carry debt.

In NSW and Tasmania, homes are still likely owned outright but head north to the Northern Territory and renting is more common.

The snapshot comes ahead of the first full official release of Census data, which is due to occur on June 27.
