Tough mother-of-three ready to fight cancer after son's birth
A young mother who put off cancer treatment so she could give birth to her son is now preparing for her own battle.
Laura Schram welcomed little Alfie into the world three days ago, but next week she’ll undergo life-saving surgery to treat a rare stomach cancer.
The mother-of-three risked her own life after being told of the cancer mid-pregnancy.
Defying all the odds, little Alfie was born via caesarean at 32 weeks.
“My turn now,” Ms Schram said.
“A little bit scared but it will only be seven days and I can get back to the baby, focus on that.
“There’s no remission, it’s just done and dusted.”
The 27-year-old said she was cherishing the cuddles with her newborn, and hoped her son could head home soon.
“(Daughter) Ivy is in love … she was in NICU screaming the place down saying that’s her baby,” Ms Schram said.
“I was extremely happy when (Alfie) was screaming the house down.
“We’re hoping he’ll be off oxygen and we’ll get a few more cuddles.”
Laura’s husband Cam Alford says he has no doubt the tough mother-of-three will fight the cancer.
“She’s very strong,” Mr Alford said.
“She never whinges about anything unless it’s about me.
“There’s nothing too much that’s she’s really worried about.”
Surgeons will completely remove Ms Schram’s stomach in what is expected to be a five-hour operation.
Once she’s recovered from the surgery, the 27-year-old will then undergo a double mastectomy to ensure she’s completely cancer free.
