Good Samaritan swept away in Queensland floodwaters found dead

A 60-year-old good Samaritan who was swept away in floodwaters southwest of Cairns has been found dead.

The man, reported to be local vegetable farmer Alfonso Muoio, was trying to alert motorists about rising floods near his property when he slipped off a bridge and into a swollen creek at Tolga, about 6pm Wednesday.

The man's body was found about 11am Thursday in the Barron River.

Police said in a statement that he was located about seven kilometres from where he went into the water.

Sergeant Bill Stanley said others who had been directing traffic desperately tried to rescue him.

"Despite their very best efforts they were unable to rescue him, so he has continued down the creek until he disappeared from view," he told ABC radio.
