Police hunt for child sex offender who fled Fairfield 'facility'

Police are searching for a sex offender who fled from a residential treatment facility north of Melbourne on Tuesday night.

Christopher Austen, 22, left the Disability Forensic Assessment and Treatment Service in Fairfield about 11.30pm.

He is currently serving a five-year residential placement order after being sentenced in 2013 for sexually assaulting and threatening a five-year-old boy.

Investigators have released an image of the man, in the hope someone may have information regarding his whereabouts.

Austen is described as 166cm, medium-build and short dark hair with a "rat's tail".

He has two lines cut into his right eyebrow and dollar signs tattooed on his right leg and right middle finger.

When he fled, Austen was wearing blue shorts, white sneakers, black socks, a dark baseball cap and a dark windcheater.

Police urge anyone who sees Austen not to approach him, but call triple-0 immediately.
