Elderly Perth crossing guards quit after being abused, spat at
Two elderly children’s crossing guards have been forced to quit after they were allegedly spat at, abused and had cigarette butts flicked at them by angry motorists in Perth’s south.
The elderly women have asked to be moved from their Secret Harbour post after what they say has been “constant abuse”.
Dozens of children are now crossing a busy dual carriageway to Secret Harbour Primary School until at least Thursday when a replacement can start.
“It’s very dangerous, well we just had trouble just then. Nobody wants to stop for you,” parent Denise said.
“They’ve been spat at, sworn at, just about run down,” another parent added.
Secret Harbour parents are concerned that if the abuse doesn’t stop, the new guards could also refuse to work at the Warnbro Sound Avenue site, leaving young children to try and cross the busy four-lane street with no help.
Local member Paul Papalia has called on police to step in and protect the wardens.
“The answer is not to cut the service, the answer is to enforce the law,” he said.
