Passengers injured as Sydney ferry crashes into Circular Quay wharf
Up to 19 passengers were injured after a Sydney ferry crashed into the Circular Quay wharf.
The Sydney Ferry Supercat hit the wharf around 4.20pm on Tuesday afternoon, with the impact causing passengers to fall over.
Witnesses say the ferry came into the wharf too fast before it hit the front pontoon, leaving at least one person with spinal injuries after he was thrown on the upper deck.
“You felt it should have been stopping, but it wasn’t,” one passenger said.
According to crews at the scene, the majority of passengers on board the ferry were tourists.
The police rescue team were called in to bring an injured man down from the top deck, while six patients were taken to St Vincent's Hospital for further treatment.
A NSW Transport spokesperson confirmed the ferry hit the wharf after arriving from Watsons Bay.
"A Sydney Ferry Supercat came into contact with the far eastern pontoon at Circular Quay Wharf as it was berthing this afternoon," the spokesperson said.
"It was the 3.45pm Watsons Bay to Circular Quay service.
"Our priority is making sure our customers are okay."
Paramedics treated 19 passengers from the Wharf 5 scene, with most suffering only minor injuries.
The Manly Fast Ferry quickly issued its own statement, saying the Circular Quay incident has "no effect" on its services on Tuesday afternoon.
It is not yet clear why the ferry was travelling too fast on the approach.
Police and Sydney Ferries are investigating.
