Man killed as unoccupied planes collide at airport in Adelaide

A man in his 60s has died after two planes collided on the tarmac of an Adelaide airport.

Police were called to Parafield Airport shortly after 4pm when the aircraft collided head on.

An Australian Transport Safety Bureau told AAP it is believed someone was trying to start an aircraft, which got away, colliding with another aircraft.

A SA Police spokesman said both planes were unoccupied at the time of the crash.

7 News understand the dead mad was on the tarmac when he was struck in the collision.

Emergency crews raced to the scene but paramedics could not save the 62-year-old Wattle Park man.

Police have not confirmed the extent of any injuries.

The ATSB will send a team of investigators to the airport on Monday morning.

The pilot, a 62-year-old man from Wattle Park, sadly died at the scene.
