'Nice guy' catches escaped prisoner in Queensland

A young truck driver who helped stop a prisoner on the run north of Brisbane says his actions aren’t heroic.

Josh Morgan followed escapee Kyle Wilson into bushland after the 21-year-old prisoner was hit by a car on Deception Bay Road in his dash for freedom.

Completely unaware of Mr Wilson’s alleged criminal past, Mr Morgan says he went to help the person he thought was an injured pedestrian.

“He wanted to sit down for a couple of minutes so I sat down and started talking to him. He was complaining about his legs and his back and his head hurting,” Mr Morgan said.

The truck driver then escorted Mr Wilson back to police.

“My parents reckon it’s a hero act. I don’t really, I was just being nice,” Mr Morgan said.

Mr Wilson and fellow prisoner Nathan Walton had earlier on Monday pushed open the back doors of a police van on their way to Woodford prison.

Both men were quickly recaptured but questions on how the duo escaped is now the focus of an Ethical Standards investigation.

Mr Wilson and Mr Walton appeared in court on Tuesday in handcuffs and are now facing more serious charges.

The duo’s freedom dash could cost them a maximum seven years behind bars - substantially more than the sentence they faced for charges including wilful damage and drug possession.
