Grim find: Garbage collecter discovers dead body on footpath

A garbage collector who had stepped out of his truck to retrieve a large group of bins has stumbled across a dead body on a Melbourne footpath.

The circumstances behind the death of a man whose body was found are unclear, police say, after they were alerted to the body found in St Phillip St in Brunswick East just after 3am on Tuesday.

The man's body was found at the top end of Melbourne's famous Lygon St by the garbage collector as he stepped out of his truck.

He remains shaken on Tuesday morning after the discovery of the body of a man believed to have been shot.

There are no details about the deceased man but there are reports he was found with gunshot wounds.

Homicide detectives and forensic police are on the scene and have begun the investigation.
