DPP wins appeal to extend sentence of former Bega Cheese CEO

The Director of Public Prosecutions has won an appeal to have the sentence extended for former Bega Cheese CEO Maurice Van Ryn, who was handed a seven-convicted of charges relating to sexually abusing children.

The win means the sentence will be extended to the maximum of 18 years.

It was previously reported the DPP planned to challenge the sentence in the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal on the grounds it was ‘manifestly inadequate’.

Van Ryn was the chief executive of Bega Cheese for 15 years.

He was convicted of 14 charges over attacks on nine boys and girls, aged eight to 15, between 2003 and 2014.

The offences occurred in southern NSW.

The attacks included the rape of a 15-year-old boy, performing oral sex on another and molesting and indecently assaulting other children.
Van Ryn often groomed his victims with gifts and sweets.

During earlier court hearings Van Ryn confessed to the court he had a disorder which meant he had been attracted to children for most of his life.
