Sydney man 'left in tears' after cruel thieves stole his wheelchair

A Sydney man has had his freedom of movement taken away after cruel thieves stole his wheelchair from outside his unit.

Ultimo man Julian Stewart said he was left in tears when he found his non-motorised wheelchair had been stolen from a common area of his unit block on Mary Ann St on Wednesday morning.

“I started crying, if I could describe it, it was like someone took my legs from underneath me,” he told 7 News.

Mr Stewart has cerebral palsy and his wheelchair was custom made to help him with every day tasks such as showering and dressing himself.

The chair was last seen about 9.30pm on Tuesday and he noticed it was missing about 12.15am Wednesday.

Julian's wheelchair was custom made. Police urge anyone with information to come forward.

Police were following up a number of lines of inquiry, including whether local businesses or residents had closed-camera footage of the area.

The theft means that Mr Stewart can no longer get around like he used to.

Police have spoken to a number of residents in the area.

Anyone with any information can contact Crime Stoppers or Sydney City police.
