Five boaties rescued off New South Wales south coast

Five people have been rescued off the New South Wales south coast after a boat overturned.

A distress beacon was activated about 8.30am on Christmas Day near Bateman’s Bay.

The Westpac Helicopter was called about three hours later and spotted the overturned boat 5km offshore.

The five were winched to safety after they spent most of the morning sitting on the upturned hull.

Three who were on board had been in the water for more than three hours and were suffering from hypothermia.

One man was treated for a concussion after he hit his head on the boat.

Rescue crews later said they were lucky to be alive.
