Mr Ruygrok was a staffer of Coogee MP Bruce Notley-Smith’s office until April when he moved up as adviser and parliamentary liaison officer for the Attorney General Gabrielle Upton.

“Early this morning my good friend, former staff member and just all round great guy Nicholas Ruygrok was tragically killed in a cycling accident," Notley-Smith wrote on his Facebook page.

“Nick was an amazingly talented, hard working and loyal member of the Coogee Team and quickly earned the respect and friendship of so many colleagues in the Parliament of NSW.

“We are all absolutely devastated. Our thoughts are with his fiancé Verity and his family at this time of immeasurable loss.”

Dulwich Hill is one of the oldest cycling clubs in Australia and released a statement on Facebook saying that "their thoughts are with the deceased rider's family" and noted they would co-operate with the police investigation.

"The club will offer whatever assistance possible at this terrible time."

Officers from the Eastern Beaches Local Area Command cordoned off the area during their investigation, closing roads between the intersection of Fitzgerald Avenue and Bunnerong Road; Fitzgerald Avenue and Wild Street; and the intersection of Donovan Avenue and Walsh Avenue.
