Northern Territory man politely asks crocodiles to move off road

A Northern Territory man has filmed the epic moment he politely asked two crocodiles to stop blocking the road.

Tour guide operator Darren Nickolls was approaching Cahills Crossing in Arnhem Land, when he spotted the stubborn reptiles blocking the way.

Instead of beeping at the crocodiles, or slowly edging his vehicle forward to scare them off, the owner of the Dhipirri Barra and Sportfishing Lodge slowly approached the creatures on foot.

“Do you want to get off the road so we can pass please?” Mr Nickolls politely asked the pair.

While one croc was quick to jump back into the water, the second needed a bit more encouragement.

“C’mon get of the road, move, thank you,” he added, before the second crocodile slid into the dark water.

Mr Nickolls told Yahoo7 that it was not uncommon for crocodiles to be spotted on the crossing, which runs over the East Alligator River.

“It’s not unusual up here, especially at that crossing,” he said.

“A couple of months ago during the day, there were up to 30 crocodiles there.”

Mr Nickolls noted that he has experience around crocodiles and played down the praise he has received on social media for his confidence and pilot manners in the situation.

“Don’t try and touch them or get near them," he warned. "They look close to me on camera, but they were probably a good three or four metres away,” he said.

While the video shows that good manners can go a long way in the animal kingdom, we will be sure to keep our distance if we ever come across these powerful reptiles out in the bush.
