Controversial deputy mayor Salim Mehajer being sued for almost $700,000
Infamous Auburn deputy mayor Salim Mehajer has been hit with yet another legal setback as liquidators of one of his companies have taken court action again him and his business partner.
The deputy mayor shot to national fame during his outrageous August wedding. The man behind the country's "wedding of the century" has already survived a push for him to be sacked from his position as deputy mayor of a western Sydney council.
Since then he has managed to stay in the national headlines thanks to a string of controversies.
Salim and business partner Minh Hua were the joint owners of the now defunct company SM Project Developments are being sued for allegedly breaching their directors’ duties.
“SM went into liquidation. Liquidator advertised the property, so like any other citizen I attended the auction,” Mehajer told news.com.au.
“I was the successful bidder.”
The liquidator, Anthony Elkerton of Dean-Willcocks Advisory, says in documents filed with the corporate regulator that he believes the cause of the failure of the company is "poor strategic management of [the] business".
SM went into liquidation last year over unpaid taxes. Corporate documents show that a total of $889,709 is owed to the Australian Taxation Office and three smaller creditors.
Mr Elkerton is pursuing Mehajer and Hua in the Supreme Court for up to $672,297 plus interest and costs.
Earlier in the week the deputy mayor was pulled over by police this time for alleged driving offenses.
He was stopped behind the wheel of an unregistered Ferrari at Punchbowl.
Police claim he was stopped again 25 minutes later after ignoring their instructions not to drive.
