Teen accused of Melbourne mother's hit-and-run death granted bail

The teenager accused of killing a Melbourne mother in an alleged hit-and-run death while on a monkey bike has been granted bail.

Caleb Jakobsson was "quite distressed" and tearful when interviewed by a Youth Justice adviser last month who deemed him fit for the youth justice bail program, the Victorian Supreme Court heard.

Mr Jakobsson is charged with dangerous driving occasioning death and failing to stop and render assistance when he allegedly struck 34-year-old Andrea Lehane outside the Carrum Downs shopping Centre on September 23.

The teen was riding a small motorbike at the time and allegedly sped away from scene.

Ms Lehane was left with "unsurviveable brain damage" as she crossed a pedestrian crossing on a Thursday evening shortly after 5pm.

She was taken to the Alfred Hospital where she was pronounced dead the following evening.

Three teenage boys later handed themselves into police after executing a number of search warrants in suburbs east of Melbourne following an investigation by Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives.

Justice Phillip Priest heard Tuesday from a relative of Mr Jakobsson who lives in regional Victoria who agreed to take the teen to their home, 10km from the nearest town.

"I'm responsible for this and if Caleb does not comply with his bail conditions I will not hesitate," said the relative who cannot be named.

"I won't stand for it."

They agreed they would hand Mr Jakobsson over to police if he broke his bail conditions.
