Taxi driver accused of fatal hit and run released on bail

A Sydney taxi driver has been released on bail after spending two nights behind bars for the fatal hit and run of an elderly woman in Crow’s Nest.

Dr Mark Farhad left Surry Hills Police station on Thursday morning on $10,000 bail.

The part-time taxi driver and part-time lecturer at the University of Western Sydney's school of science and health,told Seven News of his heartache since being charged with hitting 94-year-old Suzanne King and allegedly leaving her to die.

The 51-year-old was arrested by police at a taxi depot, seven hours after Tuesday's crash.

Police relied on witnesses and CCTV recorded by a passing bus, to find and charge Dr Farhad.

They allege Dr Farhad was turning right on to the Pacific Highway on a green light, but he was supposed to give way to Ms King.

The victim was found in the middle of the road, almost 30 metres from where she was struck.

Ms King couldn’t be saved.

Dr Farhad allegedly took two more fares for $12.30 and $63.45 on Tuesday afternoon before being called back to base, six hours after the fatal crash.

The father of two said he had no words to explain how ‘deeply sorry’ he was.

“I’m really sorry for everyone in the family and friends,” he said.

Dr Farhad hasn’t admitted guilt however a court heard he has made partial confessions to police.

His wife, also an academic, told Seven News the tragedy had devastated their family.

“We both have older parents… I have no words,” she said.

Dr Farhad faces ten years in jail for dangerous driving causing death.

His wife is now desperately looking for a job to pay for the legal fight to keep her husband out of jail.
