Maximum security prisoner escapes from Goulburn Jail

A maximum security prisoner has broken out of Goulburn Correctional Centre today.

Stephen Jamieson, 28, was last seen in the vicinity of Goulburn Correctional Centre about 12.50pm today.

Prison authorities said Jamieson managed to escape from an exercise yard at the prison, then used sheets tied together and thrown over a wall to escape the yard.

They said he tied a pillow to the end of the makeshift rope of sheets, most likely to climb over razor wire at the top of the wall.

The man who has previously escaped from jail, is described as being of Caucasian appearance, 177cm tall, of thin build with a fair complexion and brown eyes.

When he was last seen, the maximum security inmate was wearing prison greens.

Jamieson was sentenced to 12 years jail for armed robbery in 2013.

Police are appealing for public assistance to locate the man. Anyone who sights Stephen Jamieson should not approach him but contact Triple Zero (000) immediately.

A department spokesperson said investigations would establish whether there was a link between Jamieson's escape and a man-made cavity which was discovered inside the furniture workshop at Goulburn jail in early August.

The cavity's opening, which was concealed by a cabinet, measured 40 centimetres by 18 centimetres.

The Department of Corrective Services launched an investigation to determine whether prisoners had been attempting to dig a tunnel out of the prison as part of an escape plan.

The hole was more than 100 metres away from the outside wall of the prison.
