Helicopter crashes in WA's far north

A man and his 19-year-old grandson have escaped serious injury in a helicopter crash in Western Australia's far north that wrote-off the aircraft.

Kununurra Police were informed of the crash near the Great Northern Highway in Warmun on Sunday morning and hired private helicopter business Heliwork WA to fly to the scene to confirm initial information suggesting there was two people on board and that neither had been seriously injured.

That information proved correct and the pair were checked at the local nursing post.

It appears the pair had landed for a short period of time so they could establish their bearings and check their map. When they attempted to take off again, the helicopter clipped a tree, causing it to roll and crash.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has been advised and will make follow-up inquiries with the pilot.
