MH17: Australian victim Emma Bell cremated in Amsterdam

A Northern Territory teacher who died in the Malaysia Airlines MH17 disaster over Ukraine has been cremated in Amsterdam.

Emma Bell, who had been working in the Aboriginal community of Maningrida, about 400 kilometres east of Darwin, was aboard the flight, which was shot down over eastern Ukraine in July.

In a statement, Emma's mother Barbara Bell said her daughter had been cremated in Amsterdam on Friday.

"My son Shaun and I are thankful for the overwhelming support from the Northern Territory Government and people," Ms Bell said.

She also thanked the Federal Government for its prompt action in finding and identifying Emma's remains and Qantas for helping bring her brother and family from Scotland to Australia.

"We are forever grateful to the Australian Federal Police and forensic experts who worked tirelessly in Australia, overseas at the crime scene and in the Netherlands throughout the process of Emma's identification," Ms Bell said.

Many of the remains of victims of the flight had been taken to Amsterdam for identification.

Ms Bell said it had been a bittersweet time for the family, learning that Emma was so well respected in the NT and remembered fondly by so many people.

A smoking ceremony for Emma had been conducted by Aboriginal elders in Maningrida in early August.

All 298 people on board died in the flight, including 38 Australians.
