Man held after trashing NSW nursing home

A man who broke into a nursing home on the NSW south coast and traumatised the elderly residents has been arrested.

It is alleged the 44-year-old masked man forced the back door of an aged care facility in East Nowra on Saturday night, police said.

He ransacked one woman's room and frightened residents before nursing staff confronted him and he fled.

Police believe the same man tried to rob a service station in the early hours of Sunday.

They say a man with a covered face and armed with a knife threatened the service station attendant who hit the would-be robber on the arm with a metal bar.

The man again fled empty handed.

Police arrested a 44-year-old man on Monday and charged him with: assault with intent to rob armed with offensive weapon, aggravated enter dwelling with intent and goods in custody.

He will appear at Nowra Local Court on Tuesday.
