Hunt for Vic man after WA drug seizure

West Australian police are seeking a Victorian man in relation to the state's biggest seizure of a key ingredient for making methylamphetamine.

They believe Bui Xuan Hoa, who may be in either Victoria or NSW, could help with an ongoing investigation into an organised crime syndicate that smuggled ephedrine originating from Vietnam into Australia via Cambodia.

Two men have already been arrested over their alleged involvement in the syndicate.

In January, a 21-year-old Canadian man was arrested in the Perth CBD in connection to about 4kg of ephedrine was found in a West Perth apartment, where the drug was being extracted from stuffed toys. A further 20kg of ephedrine was found during a search of a Belmont location.

He was charged with two counts of possess a prohibited drug with intent to sell or supply and has been remanded in custody awaiting his next court appearance.

Later in January, a man was arrested in Phnom Penh after police found he had 11kg of ephedrine hidden in toys that were destined for Australia.

WA Police said that matter was being dealt with by local authorities.

They said the 24kg seizure was believed to be the largest of its kind in WA and could have produced $10 million worth of methylamphetamine.
