Prison worker accused of drug trafficking

A corrective services officer is accused of trafficking drugs into a NSW south coast prison.

Police arrested the 43-year-old man on Tuesday morning when he arrived to work at the Nowra prison and discovered he was carrying 150 tablets in a heat-sealed pack.

Officers then searched the man's home in Shellharbour and found cash and drugs.

He was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station and charged with trafficking drugs into a correctional centre, corruptly receiving benefit and supplying prohibited drugs.

Investigations were launched into the man after claims that prohibited drugs, prescription drugs and other contraband were being smuggled into the prison in return for payment.

The man was granted conditional bail and is due to appear before Port Kembla Local Court on August 6.
