Three teens charged over car theft

Two boys, aged 13 and 14, have been charged after allegedly breaking into a house, stealing a car and setting it on fire in Newcastle.

A 60-year-old man reported intruders in his unit, and the theft of his car and a packet of cigarettes early on Wednesday.

Shortly afterwards, police received reports of a car doing burnouts on a cycle way and found a Mazda 4 in flames when they investigated.

A search began and three boys, aged 13, 14 and 15, were arrested.

The younger boys have been charged with several offences, including aggravated break enter and steal, stealing, destroying property by fire, and unlicensed driving.

The 14-year-old was refused bail to appear at a children's court on Thursday, while the 13-year-old was given strict bail conditions to appear at a children's court on August 4.

The 15-year-old will receive a youth caution for the same offences.
