Tread carefully: High heels pose safety risk

High heels might be the height of fashion but they are also a danger to those who wear them, new research reveals.

High-heeled misadventures - such as sprains and fractures - have sent 240 people to the emergency department in the past five years.

It's not just women who are falling foul of the sky-high footwear.

Men and children are also among those hospitalised with injuries, and there have been more than a dozen violent attacks with heels used as weapons.

It has reignited the debate over why we wear them as previous research only compounds the bad news that they can cause back and spinal problems.

According to podiatrists, it's stiletto heels which pose the biggest risk.

Advice is to tread carefully and rest our feet with flats, now and then.
