Three small earthquakes hit SA

Hundreds of Adelaide residents have reported feeling an earthquake in Adelaide, one of three to strike South Australia this morning.

The magnitude 2.6 earthquake struck in the southeastern suburbs of Adelaide at about 8.25am (CDT) on Monday.

While Geoscience Australia said the epicenter was near Aberfoyle Park, Primary Industries and Regions South Australia (PIRSA) has narrowed down the epicenter to Belair.

A magnitude three quake had struck near Hawker in the Flinders Ranges at about 4.30am (CDT) and could be felt up to 23km away, while another quake struck at about 2.40am five kilometres off the coast of Noarlunga, in Adelaide’s south.

Jonathan Bathgate, senior seismologist at Geoscience Australia, said hundreds of residents reported feeling the earthquake in Adelaide.

"That's the one that's been more widely felt by the population, basically because it is in a more populated area of Adelaide," he told AAP.

"While smaller, it has certainly created more of a stir than the other one."

Mr Bathgate said the earthquake would have felt like a short and sharp jolt, lasting only a few seconds.

He said earthquakes in the area are uncommon, with Monday's quake one of only 13 in 30 years.

Earthquakes in the Flinders Ranges were quite common and hundreds occur in the area each year.

There have been no reports of damage from either quake.
