Woman shot dead at Sunshine North

A man has been arrested after a young woman was shot dead in Melbourne's western suburbs.

The victim, thought to be in her 20s, was shot dead in a house on Meadowbank Drive in Sunshine North, just after 9am.

The body was discovered in a bedroom at the rear of the property, police said.

Police have cordoned off a section of the street and forensics investigators have been called in.

A 34-year-old man has been arrested and is helping police with their enquiries.

No charges have yet been laid.

Police say the man in custody and the victim are known to one another.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said crews were called to treat a woman shot in the upper body at about 9am (AEDT).

Paramedics had to wait until police declared the scene safe before they could enter the house.

The woman was dead when paramedics were able to enter, the spokesman said.

Neighbours were ordered to stay indoors immediately after the murder.

The woman is yet to be identified and Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
