Truck rollover scatters forklifts over highway

Heavy machinery thrown to the road in a truck crash north of Adelaide has caused traffic gridlock on Port Wakefield Rd early this morning.

Police said the driver of the truck lost control in heavy rain at about 3am this morning at Wild Horse Plains.

Two of the three off-road forklifts fell onto the road, forcing the closure of the entire north-bound lane of Highway 1 just north of Dublin.

Making matters worse, a vehicle travelling in the same direction minutes after the initial crash hit one of the machines which had fallen onto the road.

Police alleged the driver fled the scene, but returned at about 6.20am.

He is currently in hospital in a stable condition.

Traffic was forced to divert through Mallala and Balaklava, while heavy vehicles were stopped and forced to wait until the scene was cleared.

The morning got even worse for one ute driver when her vehicle mysteriously caught fire while waiting in traffic.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze, but the vehicle was destroyed.
