'Courageous Corey' Lake's tough new battle

DONATE: Corey Lake

Sydney's Macarthur region has rallied to support a local boy, hailed as a champion for his personal courage.

Corey Lake has beaten an incredible run of serious illness in his short life, but now he is facing his biggest battle.

He isn't yet thirteen, but he already knows more about hospitals and surgery than most adults.

Corey has suffered heart disease, had a transplant at four, lymphoma at 11, and beat it only to suffer acute organ rejection this year.

He has not been home since June, but there is no self pity. His only words are ones of gratitude.

That help has come from his school, Magdalene Catholic High, and from the Macarthur community which has been selling wristbands to show support.

"Despite the fact everything he's been through he always stays happy and positive," student Danielle Flood said.

Corey is one of the youngest students at his school, but staff say he is responsible for teaching other students some of their most important lessons.

"[It's] about being a person of hope, about always thinking about other people before yourself, and about having courage," Assistant Principal Greg Elliott said.

Corey turns thirteen tomorrow.
